“归类”作为一种特殊的文体分类方式,在清代得到极大发展。这种分类方式兼顾文体的同与异,对厘清纷繁复杂的中国古代文体系统大有裨益。清人文体归类采用的标准反映出其辨体理念乃“以功能为主,内容和形式为辅,多种因素并存”。这种理念体现出中国古代文体的实用价值取向相对审美价值取向有极大优势。而这种优势的建立源自古代中国的文学与文体观念:文学的本质是社会生活自身,文体是人们生活行为过程中“文字单元”类型化的结果。这样的文学观念造成古人对文体功用特性的过分关注,也使规定古人生活方式的“礼”浸染到庞大的文体系统。清人文体归类中的辨体理念,正是在这种文学与文化土壤中孕育而成。但深究其源,则与中国古人的整体性思维方式密切相关。同时,清人文体归类对文体审美与抒情特征的发掘,也使中国现代纯文学观念与体系形成的本土因素得以彰显。
“Classification”,as a special way of stylistic classification,was greatly developed in the Qing Dynasty.This approach balances the similarities and differences among literary genres,which is of great help in clarifying the complicated system of ancient Chinese literature. The standards for genre classification adopted by Qing scholars reflect their conceptual framework which emphasizes functionality, with content and form as secondary considerations, coexisting alongside multiple factors. This concept of genre classification showcases a pronounced advantage of utilitarian value over aesthetic value in ancient Chinese literature. Such an advantage stems from ancient Chinese views on literature and styles: the essence of literature is social life itself,while the style is the result of the typification of “text units” in daily life and behavior. This concept led scholars to place excessive emphasis on the functional characteristics of literary styles, infusing the literary stylistic system with the principles of “li” 礼 that governed ancient lifestyles. Qing scholars’ concept of genre distinction in stylistic classification emerged from such literary and cultural context. However,delving deeper into its origins reveals a close connection with the holistic way of thinking prevalent among ancient Chinese scholars. Additionally, Qing scholars’ exploration of aesthetic and lyrical characteristics in stylistic classification highlights the indigenous factors that contributed to the formation of modern concept and framework of pure literature in China.
