Geology knowledge and education was introduced for practical application and the realistic request of prospecting and mining in late Qing Dynasty. After Cai Yuanpei 蔡元培 was appointed as the president of Peking University, he advocated for the establishment of humanities and science to advance academic research, leading the previously-suspended geology program to the re-establishment in 1917. With the limitations of concepts, faculty and equipment, geology program remained heavily focused on metallurgy, and progress in academic research was slow. In 1919, it was reorganized into the Department of Geology, aiming to introduce Western faculty to shift the academic climate. As Amadeus William Grabau and Li Siguang 李四光 joined the Department of Geology, faculty members collaborated with peers in the academic community to conduct research. Students established a geological research association, and faculty and students jointly investigated geological matters, facilitating smoother academic research. Meanwhile, Peking University's faculty governance concept, including the establishment of committees such as the Faculty Council and the Evaluation Council, ensured that academic research could continue amidst changing circumstances. By 1924, the Department of Geology had developed a relatively complete academic structure, fostering the training of geological talents while promoting the advancement of science and the economy in China.
